Training and Development Manager Justin Jenkins shares his thoughts on being a mentor and where we should look for the best example.

I just wanted to share some things that I came across this weekend and how I am trying to apply it to every aspect of my life. I was trying to find information and material for mentoring, and was led back to the Bible. The greatest mentor that ever was and will ever be, is Jesus! The Bible clearly gives us the outline on how to be a mentor and how to successfully inspire others to reach a potential that is greater than they could ever envision for themselves.

As I prayed and asked God to led me to a starting place, He led me to the 10 Commandments. “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” This was very convicting.  As I sat and reflected, I realized that I place so many other things in life first and when I have time or the remaining open space, I then find time for my relationship with Christ.  This is completely backwards! He yearns for a relationship with me and that should come first and foremost! Deuteronomy 6:4-9 says “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.  Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.  These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.  Impress them on your children.  Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.  Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.  Write them on the door frames of your houses and your gates.”

The thing that stuck out most of all, was tie them as symbols on your hands.  Most of us, including myself wear the bracelet of “The Golden Rule”.  As I was reading through Matthew, Matthew 22:36-40 hit me as the light bulb moment.  Matthew 22:36-40 says “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment of the Law?’ Jesus replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.  The is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it; Love your neighbor as yourself.  All the Law and the Prophets hand on these two commandments.”

The common theme in both of those commandments is RELATIONSHIPS. Relationships are the primary means God established for learning about and preserving His commandments.  However, these close relationships are often lacking in today’s society.  Mentoring is a way of raising up mature Christian disciples within the Body of Christ.

My prayer for each of us is to be still and feel the love of our Father, thank Him for loving us so much that He sent Jesus to die for us so we may have that personal relationship with Him.

Below are some quotes from Jon Gordon.

“A real team is a group of individuals whose collective strength is great than each person’s individual weakness. Better together!” ~ Jon Gordon

“We find out through adversity who is connected or not.  Why?  Because connection is what breeds commitment.  You will never have commitment without connection.  Remember that!  It’s the connection that breeds our commitment.  That makes us stronger together.  And through adversity, we have a choice… we can run away from each other or we can run towards each other.” ~ Jon Gordon

“Positive teams take on the battle, overcome the negativity, face the adversity, and keep moving forward.  They communicate, connect and encourage each other.  They build relationships and trust that make them stronger.  And they commit to each other and sacrifice for one another.” ~ Jon Gordon
